Click for audio: The Prayer of Prosperity Part 2

Because the issue of prosperity and its relationship to the spiritual path is an important one, I was asked if I would elaborate on it further.

The main concern most of us have with the spiritual approach to prosperity is the constant change and bombardment of information from the material level. While we accept that we are spiritual beings engaged in a human/material experience, the bulk of our attention goes to the material aspect. The temptation, then, is to begin thinking that our main goal in gaining spiritual understanding is to better control the material side of our experience. With many, the tail, it seems, wags the dog.

The spiritual awakening is not the means to the end of a more prosperous, healthy, or orderly life; it is an end in itself. When Jesus said to seek first the kingdom, I believe he was pointing to the importance of truly knowing ourselves as spiritual beings, not burdened with material needs, but already free. In other words, he was placing the priority on the spiritual experience, exposure to our present spiritual completeness. This exposure allows us to approach our material issues from a point of strength rather than from a perpetual, reactionary position of weakness.

As we examine our present approach to prosperity from a spiritual perspective, we will likely find that we are no closer to resolving the prosperity issue than ever. In addition, we will probably also find that we hold an image of ourselves reaching the point of spiritual enlightenment where our material issues are permanently resolved. If you’ve ever worked a jigsaw puzzle, you start with a full picture on the box. This picture helps us fit all the pieces together.

Experiencing the soul through meditation provides us with the whole picture of who and what we are. Otherwise, we stand outside the soul’s sanctuary trying to piece together a puzzle without knowing what we’re trying to accomplish.
Regardless of your present material needs, take time to be still with the single intention of entering the sanctuary of your soul. This is not an either/or issue. The material level is important and the pieces need to fit together. Make your priority getting the big picture first, seek first your inner kingdom, and see how the pieces begin to fall in place.
